Diesel/Shop/Road Mechanic

Department: Road Mechanic
Location: San Antonio, TX

Diesel mechanics repair trucks, buses, and other equipment. They also diagnose problems with diesel powered engines, inspect, repair, or overhaul anything with a diesel engine as well as keep up-to-date records. This position involves in shop repairs as well as road service repairs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Determine vehicle condition by  conducting inspections/diagnostic tests; identify worn and damaged parts.
  • Verify vehicle performance by conducting test drives; adjusting controls and systems.
  • Comply with federal/state vehicle requirements by testing engine, safety, and combustion control standards.
  • Maintain vehicle records by annotating services and repairs.
  • Correct vehicle deficiencies by removing, repairing, adjusting, overhauling, assembling, disassembling, and replacing major assemblies, sub-assemblies, components, parts, or systems, such as, power and drive trains, electrical, air conditioning, fuel, emission, brake, steering, hydraulics; completes machine shop operations; making adjustments and alignments including bearing loads, gear tooth contact, valve mechanisms, governors, oil systems, control linkages, clutches, and traction units.
  • Keep shop equipment operating by following operating instructions; troubleshoot breakdowns; maintain supplies; perform preventive maintenance; call for repairs.
  • Contain costs by using warranty; evaluate service and parts options.
  • Keep supplies ready by inventorying stock; placing orders; verifying receipt.
  • Update job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading technical and regulation publications.
  • Enhance maintenance department and organization reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.
  • Test drive vehicle to ensure it is running smoothly.
  • Inspect brake systems, steering mechanisms, transmissions, engines, and other parts of vehicles.
  • Adjust and align wheels, tighten bolts and screws, and attached system components.
  • Follow a checklist of inspection procedures
  • Routine maintenance to include: changing oil, checking batteries, lubricating equipment and parts.
  • All other duties as assigned

Requirements:

  • Valid driver license
  • 5 years of experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • ASE automotive certification
